3-Story, multi-tenant, office building sited to overlook Davis Lake. The building embodies the design principles established by Liberty Property Trust for Mendenhall. The building is angled to fit within the natural wooded surroundings and follow the lakeshore. The earth tone colors of the exterior materials soften the distinction between the building and the site. An arched opening buttressed by stone piers defines the front door and protects people from the weather. The distinct base, middle, and top integrate human proportions and connect the building to the earth and sky. The lobby and rear plaza continue the design theme and provide a direct visual and physical link to the lake and walking trail. Lakeside One is designed in accordance with the Mendenhall Design Guidelines written by DMA for Liberty Property Trust.

Converted a 20-year old, three-story, single-tenant building into a Class A, multi-tenant office building. Demolished the covered front plaza to open up the entrance and let more daylight into the building interior. The new front entry plaza, see-through lobby, and rear plaza connect tenants to the pedestrian-only, landscaped courtyard located behind the building. Two-thirds of the first floor was below grade. Excavated soil at the first floor perimeter and added windows to admit daylight, and create usable office space throughout. A new central toilet core and egress stair allow for the building to be upfit with or without corridors. New mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems were installed, and the building was brought into compliance with current building codes.

The program for the upfit evolved out of the company’s need for a design studio that fosters open communication, offers views of downtown Winston-Salem, and lets in daylight. The straightforward floor plan and simple palette of materials work in combination to create a simple, but elegant solution.

All offices have direct views to the outside. Daylight nourishes the occupants. Colors brighten the space and add visual interest. Glass partitions let light travel throughout the interior. Unenclosed workstations encourage open communications. The restrained use of materials (wood, glass, steel, and drywall) reduces waste. The downtown location encourages walking at lunchtime, promoting health and reducing daytime automobile travel. Classic modern furniture inspires. Ergonomic seating aides comfort. Indirect lighting reduces eye strain. Employees are afforded the same furnishings as the partners.

The Library was constructed circa 1905, and served as the college library until 1950, when it was supplanted by a new library and renamed the Forney Building. Forney was gutted down to the existing structural elements of floors, walls, and roof. The back half of the building was demolished and rebuilt to make the entire building 2-stories. The new rear elevation and entry terrace create an appropriate link and backdrop to an important campus quadrangle. The renovation included repairing the exterior brick and stone, installing historically accurate windows, and replacing the slate tile roof. The dynamic building interior was designed in the classical style of the building exterior. A new elevator, toilets, plumbing, fire protection, mechanical, and electrical systems were installed, and the building was brought into compliance with current building codes. The building was programmed and designed by DMA to house Information Technology Services.

The facility is located in Raleigh, NC and contains state environmental laboratories and offices. Three components of the Division of Environmental Management are located in 1-story buildings positioned around a common courtyard. The building architecture juxtaposes the technological laboratory function against the Neo-classic symbolism of the state government buildings. The solid end walls and the colonnades are formed of limestone colored concrete. The fluted columns and rusticated end walls are adapted from the Greek style of the North Carolina State Capitol building designed by Alexander Jackson Davis. The customized curtainwall system provides daylighting for the laboratories and expresses the modern laboratory function of the building interior. The buildings are rotated 15 degrees counterclockwise off the north/south axis for optimum solar orientation. Colonnades and sunshades on the south facades prevent direct solar heat gain on the curtainwall. Vertical tubes mounted to the curtainwall demark the 10’-6” laboratory planning module.

East 54 is a sustainably designed, mixed-use development located in Chapel Hill, NC. The project earned a Gold rating under the LEED for Neighborhood Development pilot program. The interior plaza is enclosed on the west edge by a covered performance stage. The plaza is designed in the European style. The sidewalks and parking are paved flush to facilitate open pedestrian movement, bollards are used to separate cars and people, and a geometric paving pattern completes the European plaza concept. The pattern adds visual interest for occupants looking down from condominiums and offices. The buildings are rich in detail and vary in style to create a dynamic environment for human activity. The entire first floor level functions as retail and dining. A 4-story office building (100) separates the project interior from Highway 54 at the north. The retail tenants are required to maintain storefronts toward Highway 54 and the storefronts are connected to the town’s bicycle and walking path traversing the site. 6-story condominium buildings (200 and 300) and a rooftop pool terrace (400) overlook the golf course to the south. Pedestrian bridges connect the fourth floor of the condominium buildings with the pool terrace. Surface vehicular parking is held to the minimum required to serve the retail tenants. Condominium and office parking is located underground beneath the buildings and in a parking deck (400). The parking deck is topped by condominiums and the pool terrace.

Design and construction of the different projects spanned 7 years. Each project was the result of attentive discussions between architect and owner. The first project consisted of a master bedroom addition and the installation of cedar shingles over the existing exterior walls. The second project was a kitchen alteration. Smaller renovation projects followed. The addition maintains good internal flow, increases daylight to the existing interior and strengthens the residents' connection to their wooded site.
